Adventures with Playdough

Spread the love

Anyone else love playdough?  I’ve tried making the home-made stuff but this Playdoh Ice Cream set was a total deal (under 8 dollars!) at Target a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t resist.  I loved playing with playdoh when I was little-we had one with barber chairs where you could squish playdough out of a doll’s head and then cut it and style it with plastic scissors-so when I found this one, I thought of the great memories my guys would make while they played.

I realize now that as an adult, playdoh makes a terrible mess.  Don’t let the picture on the front of this box fool you.  Playdough in real life with two kids does not look like this.   You are missing the picture of the big momma standing behind these two kids with a referee outfit on.  Unsupervised, two kids playing with playdough starts with the giggling you see in the picture and ends with you finding it in your shoe two rooms away when you’re headed to the grocery store.

See those little brown nugget-y things my guys are making? They are supposed to be sprinkles.  I kept finding these dried up little poo-like things on the ground for days.

And sometimes the playdough would get stuck and gush out parts it wasn’t supposed to.  And sometimes the guys would argue over who’s turn it was to squish the ice cream out.  That’s where King Frog the timer helped me out a lot and we got back to sharing- they really need to include a timer in the playdoh sets that are designed for more than two kids.

But really this has been one of our favorite toys lately.  The boys can play with it for hours and they imagine so many different things with the colorful dough.  We talk about how to roll it and practice counting and discuss the differences between shapes.  I find it relaxing to squish playdough on the table on a stressful day.  And unlike really making or baking something, there is no by-product to clutter the house or yummy delight sitting around waiting for a (this) hungry mom to devour instead of the lovely veggies she has in her fridge.  And even though it’s messy, I love the memories I now have of these sweet little faces really thinking, creating and playing with something I used to love when I was little like them.

  1. Again, I gravitate to your page, as I finish the family tax returns on the eve before they are due.

I’d rather hear about playdough poo. I want to come and make some with the boys.

Back to the returns, and a few other tasks-it’s late, but I still gravitate.

    Love to hear your stories.
