Pie-er learning at A la mode pies

September 12, 2012 by admin

Let’s call her Spicy Apple.  Last night I went to a pie making class at A la Mode pies (I guess I’m very into pie lately) and oh it was so much fun:)  We learned to make three pies: a marionberry, a spiced apple pie, and a peach.  Chris, the owner taught the class and it was obvious that he is totally passionate about pies.  I learned so many things from him, like: did you know that Washington has the best peaches in the world?  Or that if the apple’s name has delicious in it, it’s an eating apple and not a pie apple.  And a little egg-wash and some scraps make perfect pie band-aids.  These are life lessons one can only learn in a cooking/baking class and he made it so humorous and fun.  And although my pie was not the prettiest, (there’s a little flair on the bottom that I would like to eliminate in my next one) I was oh so proud.  I totally recommend this class if you think you’ll make a pie in the next couple months: hello holiday season!  This would be a perfect activity for a moms’ night:)  And yes, we also sampled nearly every pie in the case.

(PS if you don’t think you want to make pies, this place DELIVERS.  Cue swooning now.)

(PPS this place is totally near Woodland Park Zoo and serves Cafe Umbria coffee.  So you can even pick up pie, piping hot lattes and have a picnic by the penguins.  Perfect.)

OMG, I am so getting The Mister a pie class for his birthday! What a great idea. He went through a pie phase awhile back, but I had to stop him because 3 butter crust pies per week is a little crazy. Did they do a butter, shortening, lard or combo crust? Do you have a preference?

  2. I’ve been wanting to check that place out! Such a great idea…and awesome location across from the zoo! The pie class sounds fun… I LOVE LOVE LOVE baking (pies especially), and I’m sure I could gain a couple of great tips from the class. Nice post!

I love a la mode pies and the pie class was really fun. We used butter in this pie but talked about mixing butter and lard. It was such a fun class!
