5-minute ice cream

This is not exactly the same instant ice cream goodness you get when you open the freezer and just reach for a tub but it’s a little less plan-ahead than if you actually want to make ice cream in a MAKER and 5-minute ice cream is really fun to make.  I don’t know if it’s because they put everything in it themselves, but my guys always think this one is total magic.  It was hot today in Seattle so it was a perfect day to make ice cream and eat it outside.

You need:

  • a container that’s bigger than a ziplock bag with a tight-fitting lid.
  • a ziplock bag
  • ice
  • salt
  • spoonful of sugar
  • about a 1/4 cup cream (or milk)
  • little splash of vanilla
  • spoon
  • little hands to shake it all up (you might even turn on an ice-cream song.)

Start by putting your cream, sugar and vanilla in the ziplock bag.  Zip it up really tight.  Layer ice on the bottom of your container.  Sprinkle it generously with salt.  Put the sealed ziplock bag on top.  Cover with more ice.  Sprinkle with lots more salt.  Seal the lid.

Then put your music on and shake. And shake.  After about one song and lots of shaking it should be pretty solid and ice creamish.  You can put it in a bowl or just eat it out of the bag.  You could even add some toppings like coconut flakes, chocolate chips and fruit. But remember, this is 5-minute ice cream-it’s pretty wild all on its own.

(PS. this one’s messy.  You’ve been warned.)

  1. I am so going to try this with my kids this summer. I am sure they will have a blast making their own ice cream and adding whatever they please into the bag. I can see it now – sprinkles, gummy worms, chocolate chip cookie crumbs 😉

    Thanks for the recipe!

    1. Glad you like it! I used to work at a community center so I spent summers making these!

  2. The awesome part of this idea is putting it in a container. I’ve done a bag inside a bag, but everyone’s hands freeze! thanks for sharing.
