The other night the hubby and I went for date night at the Mohai‘s Member Night featuring the Drawn to Seattle Seattle Sketcher Exhibit. (We pretty much ran out of the house screaming DATE-NIGHT!!!!!!! the minute my parents arrived but here we look rather civilized, I thought.)
I’ve seen Gabriel Campanario’s work before in the Seattle Times but I don’t think I’ve paid enough attention to how interesting the storyteller behind the art really is. The hubby and I ended up on a tour and seeing Gabriel talk about his work made me really intrigued.
He has so many interesting stories about Seattle places and I love how the stories come out in his art. “Sketching is not about perfect drawings…” he said, but I think the sketches perfectly capture neat little slices of Seattle life.
If you’re coming to Seattle for the first time this exhibit (It goes until May 26, 2014) would be a great starting point to frame a vacation. It gives a neat historic background to our city and the stories about so many iconic Seattle places might help you decide which ones you want to see. There are some most people here will recognize: the Sleepless in Seattle House, the little house in Ballard that Trader Joe’s is built around, a bell in Ballard that I see every time we go to the market but never think too much about, and extremely famous places like the Space Needle. I even wrote down a few places I want to see like a dog park in Edmonds which, I think is Marina Beach Park where we will definitely bring my dog nephew the next time he visits and Waterfall park in Pioneer Square near a coffee shop that I love.
This was the first member night that I’ve been to for the Mohai but it was such a neat event and if you’ve been reading a while, you know I already love my Mohai a ton. I’ve decided that we will definitely be purchasing a family plus membership this month when my current membership expires and it might be something you want to consider too. Not only do we love visiting the Mohai and the events like this that come with being a member, but the family plus membership is perfect for travelers. It is reciprocal at many museums in North America, and I’m excited to use it locally at the Wing Luke Museum, the Tacoma Museum of Glass and the Bellevue Arts Museum. (It is also good at the Royal BC Museum that some friends have been raving about for the next time we visit Victoria, and the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, which makes a good stop on the drive up to Vancouver, BC)
(PS. after the Mohai, we headed to Dahlia Lounge where this yummy vegetarian shnitzel was one of our meal items
and I couldn’t get a picture of our hot chocolate cake dessert because we inhaled it but we had such a lovely dinner. We also saw American Hustle and thought it was quite good too. Thanks tons mom and dad for babysitting. TONS!!!!)
