Kids and Butterflies at the Seattle Science Center

Spread the love

We love the Seattle Science Center for many reasons.  When the guys were a lot smaller, the small enclosed play area was the best spot to bring mobile twins.  If we went when the Science Center opened at 10am, my guys would often have the whole area to themselves for at least a half an hour.
Now when we go we tend to explore some more of the little stations at the Science Center in greater depth.  The last time we went they spent a long time creating a ‘healthy meal’ and ordering at the takeout window in the WellBody exhibit. It’s neat that these kinds of activities help us to talk about our food choices and why we make them.  I didn’t know I’d be having these kinds of conversations with my 5-year-olds, but I think it kind of enables them to connect why something like a banana or apple might be a better snack choice for their body than a bag of potato chips.

We also went to the butterfly area.

And this is where I heard the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in a while.  It was a little boy who was younger than my guys and it was the type of thing that happens to ALL of us when we have kids in tow:

“Mom!  You squished that butterfly!”

“No I didn’t”

“I saw you!  I saw you!  Your foot stepped on it!”

“shhh!”

“It’s not moving!  It’s dead!  YOU KILLED IT!!!!!!”

“look it just moved its wing.  Look.  It’s probably just resting.  Let’s go.”

I was so caught up in that moment, I almost missed a milestone moment for our family.

Our ‘big cousin’ was visiting and a butterfly landed on his shirt.  This has NEVER happened to our guys so they thought it was the COOLEST thing ever.  I know we’ll be frequenting the butterfly area more often now and I’m definitely going to watch closely where I step.
