It’s drippy here in December in Seattle, but in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, I imagine it’s gloriously tropical. And a breakfast at the Coffee Shack, a restaurant on the Big Island would make any day perfect rain or shine. When we decided to take our two-year-old boys to the Big Island of Hawaii for the first time, before I thought about all the snorkeling we’d get to do or the coffee plantations we would see, I thought about this place where Baby Daddy and I had lovely breakfasts years ago and watched geckos eat jam. And I totally wanted to show this to the boys and their grandparents. The Coffee Shack didn’t have jam out this time, so we made sure to order toast so that we could have our own supply-we also cleared this with our waitress and she said YES! we could feed the geckos.
In order to make sure you get a table beside the railing where you can see the geckos the best, get to the restaurant at opening(check the website) and make sure you have the breakfast special with the papaya and yogurt-I’m still dreaming about how tropically-delicious it was! I love papayas so much.
The Coffee Shack had one high chair when we went in August 2010 which was a little difficult with twins but we managed because we had grandparents in tow.
Here’s the address to the Coffee Shack: 83-5799 Mamalahoa Hwy., HI and Phone is: 808-328-9555. Have you been recently? Do they still have geckos there? Is there a place that you’ve been to before kids that you just want to show them one day?
