Remember, knowledge is enlightenment.
I took some friends and their 4-year-old daughter to the market last week after a lovely but busy morning at the zoo. I gave the little one the market prep-talk because my guys always like to know what to expect in their adventures and it’s always hard to be the one who has NO IDEA what’s going on.
“I’m going to show you where they make the best cheese (Beechers of course!) we’ll try some yummy yogurt (at Ellenos. Our current addiction is rhubarb.) and probably get a slice of fruit at my favorite produce stand (it’s the one near crab tanks if you’re curious. Maybe we go to the same one…..) And then we’ll all get to see a giant wall of icky sticky gum.
We took a detour to see if my favorite ice cream in the world was available because two of us may just have needed ICE CREAM RIGHT NOW.
And then we saw it.
And she couldn’t take her eyes off of it. I thought maybe it might have been too much of a horror; maybe it’s repulsiveness was going to bring her to tears. But then she took my hand and looked me earnestly in the eyes.
“I’m going to make a gum wall.” she whispered. Like maybe we could be co-conspirators.
Of course I told her mother.
Because knowledge is enlightenment.
Terumi Pong is a Seattle-based family travel writer and mom of twin teenage boys. She loves coffee and pastries, shopping local and looking for greener ways to live. She is also known as Scout’s mom (Scout is a 5ish pound little black yorkie-poo)
That’s funny. And something I think my kids would totally get behind until I stopped them.
I am lucky my guys don’t chew gum yet, but I told them we’d go chew some and stick it there for their 6th birthday and they are beyond excited.
