Cooking is something my kids and I enjoy doing together-it’s a little like crafting or creating science experiments except the byproduct is usually something edible and that is a definite win in my house. Do you like to cook with your kids too? We have cookbooks and have taken cooking classes, even in Italy last year on a trip, but we are not always great at coming up with ideas for what we should make. So when a few friends of mine started telling me about Raddish Kids-it’s a cooking club subscription box for kids-their rave reviews made me curious if my guys might like it too. And on a recent trip to visit my parents, my guys started getting into watching cooking shows on tv with them, and I knew then that Raddish Kids would be something we should definitely try out.
What is Raddish Kids?
Even though I knew a little bit about Raddish Kids before it arrived in a box on our doorstep, I wasn’t totally sure about what to really expect. On a basic level it’s a cooking club for kids in a subscription box with three recipes each month based around a theme, a shopping list that tells you everything you need to buy and get ready and a website with extra materials and lessons that support the theme and concepts taught by the recipes in that months’ kit. There are also some table top questions, a theme tool of the month (our first month came with silicon pancake molds) and my kids’ absolute favorite thing in the box-a badge that can be put on the apron to show that you completed the month’s recipes.
How does a Raddish Kids Membership Work?
When you sign up for Raddish kids, you can choose different style memberships ranging from month by month to yearly, much like other types of subscription boxes you might already be familiar with. The cool thing about Raddish Kids is that if you have siblings who will cook together you can add each sibling for a small additional fee-this means each sibling will get the theme cooking tool of the month and a badge to put on their apron and this is something I appreciate so much as a mom of twins. You can also ship internationally and gift Raddish Kids too, so this is a great experience gift idea if someone like the grandparents are looking to give kids the gift of a lifelong skill. If you order by the 20th of the month, you get the current month’s theme shipped in 1-3 business days.
If you are thinking of trying it out, I have a coupon code for Raddish Kids for 15 dollars off a 6 month membership, just type my name “TERUMI” in the referral box.
Raddish Kids July 2019: Cosmic Cuisine
Our first ever Raddish Kids box was a Cosmic Cuisine theme. When I checked out the Cosmic Cuisine extras on the Raddish Kids site, I noticed that there is even a Spotify playlist for Cosmic Cuisine that goes along with the kit-next month I need to make sure that we put the theme music on when we cook; music and cooking go so well together. We had to plan a little in advance, we brought the shopping list to the store (I took a picture of it just in case I lost it) and the kids and I shopped for all the ingredients together. Some things like oil, and eggs we already had, but our Cosmic Cuisine Recipes also called for things “orecchiette pasta”, buttermilk and panko bread crumbs that we don’t always buy and the kids had fun searching for these things together in the store.
We made the Planetary Pasta Salad and Meteor Meatballs together one night and somehow it became one of my guys making the pasta salad while the other took over the meatballs and I kind of supervised both tasks. I also helped with some of the chopping and made sure the hand washing was done correctly but the guys were able to make a lot of the recipes on their own and I think over time they will get more confident in following the directions. I especially appreciated the “featured culinary Skill” for each recipe-it’s pretty much a small, digestible amount of information about something like “cooking perfect pasta” and the stages of heating water, or “making a meatball” and the four basic parts. I made sure the kids both read these tips and I learned a ton reading them too. I also really appreciate that you can adapt all the recipes to be vegetarian, gluten-free or dairy free and even egg-free.
The next morning we made the Planetary Pancakes and the boys made this one together and I didn’t really help at all except for overseeing the part where they might accidentally touch the hot grill. They read the directions and measured and mixed all the ingredients. They loved trying out the silicone pancake molds that were the featured cooking tool and they were so excited when the star and moon shapes turned out. My guys were so proud when they plated their pancakes for their dad and me with whip cream, berries and maple syrup. Seeing the satisfaction they felt by cooking together made me so happy-I’m so glad we tried this cooking club out.
