How do you choose where you go on a trip and where you want to stay? Our five night trip to Germany from Seattle was planned based on a school schedule, a football game and the ability to use airline miles to book the trip as well as Frankfurt having a nonstop flight from Seattle. When my son and I were planning this trip we realized that Frankfurt isn’t the most popular destination in Germany to visit, but we still really wanted to see what it was all about. Because Frankfurt has a direct flight to Seattle, it’s a city in Europe that is a bit more easily accessible to us than other cities that take more than one flight. (And if you are someone who frequently flies Alaska Airlines Condor Airlines has a partnership with this airline too). We chose the Westin Grand Frankfurt as our home base because of its proximity to the train station and because it had a lounge we could access with my Platinum Bonvoy status which would take the pressure off of having to find meals. This turned out to be an excellent choice for a Frankfurt hotel.
All about the Westin Grand Frankfurt
We took a train from Frankfurt airport to the Konstablerwache station and from there it was about a 5 minute walk to the Westin Grand Frankfurt. The hotel was close to the Zeil shopping street and MyZeil Shopping Center so it was easy to get to these places to shop and walk. We could also get to the Romerberg area walking from our hotel too so there were lots of shops and eateries nearby. Our first stop ended up being a cute chocolate shop called Bitter and Zart and we thought we’d get a chance to revisit but never did. (This should be such a rule on trips-take the photo or soak in the visit the first time because often we don’t go back for a second time.)
The lounge at the Westin Grand Frankfurt for Platinum and higher Bonvoy members was open from around 6am-11pm daily so on our first day in Frankfurt we got in around 5pm and we grabbed drinks in the lounge before we went out shopped a bit and then came back for a light dinner (it was ramen noodles with toppings) and this was a fantastic first night, and on the next night there was pasta, salad and a bunch of hors d’ouerves. In our travels we’ve found that having a lounge like this is so helpful for taking the pressure off having to find food during our explorations and allows us to try street foods and other bites rather than sitting for a whole meal. We often don’t book our trips in time to get reservations for restaurants too and having a lounge as backup allows for more spontaneity.
The breakfast at the Westin Grand Frankfurt is also spectacular. There is even a whole table devoted to yogurt toppings and maybe 4 or 5 islands full of food. Congee was an item I didn’t expect to see. We had fun trying the different smoothie shots offered at breakfasts here too.
Our room was a lot more spacious than I thought it would be. It had a comfortable modern design and it was quiet and clean.
How to spend a day in Frankfurt
We stopped in at the Tourist center in the Romerburg area and got a Frankfurt two day card that included transportation. If you are a group of two or more you can book this as a group ticket and it’s even more reasonably priced this way too. We used the Frankfurt Card for discounts on museums and it gave us transportation and ultimately we would have spent more if we didn’t get this card. We could have gotten a discount for a cruise on the river with the Frankfurt card but we really wanted to do the Sunset cruise and that one wasn’t included in the discount. We asked which museums were most popular if we didn’t have a lot of time to visit the city and were told to go to the Stadel Museum and the Historical Museum of Frankfurt. We also visited the Kleinmarkethalle and had a lovely lunch upstairs. I’m not a fan of towers and my son tricked me into climbing the Cathedral tower which ended up having fantastic views (we were there at opening and ended up seeing only one other group) and we even got a video. We shopped at the Adidas store (I don’t know why I didn’t know Adidas was from Germany) and my son got a Bayern Munich jersey. We tried something called Spaghetti Eis and it was delicious.
My son and I had a really great time in Frankfurt and I’m glad we had a chance to stay here for a few days of our trip. I think the convenient location of our hotel helped us see a lot in this city and it’s pretty awesome you can get here with a nonstop flight from Seattle.
