Kafka’s Coffee has been part of our Vancouver adventures for decades now- my best friend baked for them years ago and they have really delicious coffee and food. But the newest Kafka’s Coffee location is so perfect for Vancouver families (and Seattle families visiting Vancouver) so I needed to talk about it here.
It’s next to a playground
Kafka’s Coffee “Park” location on 860 Richards Street has the best Vancouver location for a coffee shop if you are someone with kids in tow because it is next to a pretty epic playground. This location also opens earlier than most downtown Vancouver coffee shops so it’s great for kids that wake up at dawn. When we went it had a 7 am opening while the coffee shops closer to our hotel did not open until 8am. (We visited Vancouver two times in winter 2022 and stayed at the Sheraton Wall Centre because they are one of the only places in the city I can get a reasonably priced two bedroom hotel room with two beds for the teenagers in one of the rooms. Elysian coffee is the most reliable coffee closest to that hotel but did not open up until 8am when we were there)
We usually come here just for coffee but the menu is extensive with toasts and pastries and soups, sandwiches and macaroni’s for lunch. They even bake bread. I have never had coffee without art at Kafka’s
The playground has a big climbing structure, a cool slide and trampolines and nets built into the walkways so that even grownups can play a little too.
And it’s also close to waffles
If you want to make it an extended morning Nero Waffles is very close (and walkable) to Kafka’s Coffee on Richards and they make extraordinary waffles. We took my niece and nephew for a waffle breakfast one morning that we were in the city. They do not have reservations and can get lined up so we went for opening. We read the menu in line and learned that you choose between Brussels or Liege waffles just like in Belgium.
(Also before we lined up we planned on having Kafka’s Coffee breakfast as backup just in case it was too long for the kids to wait.)
Do you choose coffee shops near playgrounds? Here is another playground/park we really like when we visit Vancouver BC too
