If you aren’t camping it can be tough to find dog-friendly places to stay on the Olympic Peninsula that are good for families with kids too. There are an abundance of traditional motel-style rooms but it is harder to find a place that allows for a little more spread. We had a few days to do a loop through the Olympic Peninsula from Seattle that included stays at Kalaloch Lodge and Iron Springs Lodge and wanted a place near Dungeness Spit and realized Sequim might be the best place to look.

All about the Dungeness Bay Cottages in Sequim

I didn’t know the Dungeness Bay Cottages existed until about three days before we arrived. I have wanted to stay at the Juan de Fuca Cottages next door for a while but dogs are not allowed there. I found the Dungeness Bay Cottages by accident when I looked up Sequim on Airbnb last minute for apartments that were available and there was vacancy for the night we needed. (And oh my goodness, now that I’ve looked on the cottages website, I found out that the group that runs it also has a castle that they rent out in Sequim too. If you’ve always wanted to stay in a castle near Seattle, this might be your opportunity!)

The Olympic Pensinula Room at Dungeness Bay Cottages

We stayed in room that was called the Olympic Peninsula Room on the cottage website, but on the Airbnb site I didn’t realize there were different theme rooms for each of the cabins. The decor is a little updated since the website posted pictures and I really liked the whimsical touches. The view of the water was pretty and the peacefulness of being here was something we all needed. We liked walking around the area along the water past the cows and lavender field growing in the neighborhood in the evening and the whole area felt very calm and serene. I might have also picked the “Beach Cottage” room if I had known about it or if it was available -this room has a hot tub and can also accommodate a dog and kids so this might be a fun room to rent too. They also have kayaks, and bikes to rent and a little private dock area with spectacular views.

Staying near Dungeness Spit with kids and a dog

The only thing I didn’t look up before we went to the Olympic Peninsula is if dogs are allowed on Dungeness Spit. Before being a dog-owner, I didn’t know how many places dogs cannot go, but we pulled up to the trail and learned that dogs are not allowed. There was a small trail near the campsites where dogs could walk so we did that, but if Dungeness Spit is on your list you might have to divide and conquer if you have a dog. We also tried to go to Marymere Falls on our way to Kalaloch Lodge but dogs are also not allowed on that hike. Thankfully Ruby Beach (about 2 hours from Dungeness Bay Cottages and 15 minutes from Kalaloch Lodge) lets dogs on the beach and our whole family was happy to picnic on the beach and get our energy out.

Ruby Beach is about 2 hours from Dungeness Bay Cottages and 15 minutes from Kalaloch Lodge and dogs are welcome on the beach.

Another place to stay with kids and dogs on the Olympic Peninsula?

If you’re visiting the area, a friend of mine also recommended the Chevy Chase Beach Cabins in Port Townsend as a great place for kids and dogs too. Apparently even the golf course here is dog-friendly as well! Have you stayed near Sequim with kids and a dog and have a place to recommend? I’d love to hear about it!
