I was invited to Climate Pledge Arena for the media preview of the food scene for this year’s Seattle Kraken season. It’s year four for the Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena and of course my family is very excited about hockey-the first game we ever went to was in December of 2021. Coming from Canada, I have looked for poutine at this stadium ever since but I haven’t yet seen it (it may have been there but I’ve never verified with my own eyes) This year, Ethan Stowell’s Victor Tavern has poutine at Seattle Kraken hockey games so this may be exciting to you too if you ever grew up going to a rink in Canada. (We actually just had fries with gravy at our local rink, no curds but it is so much better with the curds). There is also something new that is reminiscent of convenience store trips for ice cream as a kid-a chocolate dipped taco from Sweet Ride and their ice cream tricycles will be at the games this year too.
When does Kraken hockey season start?
I always thought hockey started in October or November but there are pre-season games coming up this September! There is one against Calgary on the 22nd and then the Canucks on the 26th. The Canucks still have my heart a bit so it’s fun to watch the Kraken/Canuck rivalry games both in Vancouver and in Seattle. We have kind of doubled our hockey viewing now that there is a Seattle team.
Climate Pledge 300 mile challenge
Climate Pledge arena is the first zero-carbon-certified arena in the whole world and there are so many cool ways they’ve accomplished this. The hockey ice is made from rainwater harvested from the roof (can you imagine if we all could harvest a bit more rainwater in Seattle, we might look forward to stormy days more knowing that it’s a resource we can use). And the other day we learned that 75% of the food ingredients used in Climate Pledge arena are sourced within 300 miles of Seattle. Not only does this help our environment but it helps with jobs in our state. And I’m not sure if they still have tours of the arena but we went on one last year and it was a fantastic way to learn more about all that is going on at Climate Pledge Arena and I really appreciated learning about all the sustainability efforts and behind the scenes.
Climate Pledge Arena has snacks with packaging that is 100% compostable
Have you ever heard of a stadium where its snack packagings are biodegradable? I can’t wait for our next Kraken hockey game or arena event (I’m not sure which will come first) because I’ll definitely have my eye out for the snacks at the game. We learned from Executive Chef Molly De Mers at the media preview that snacks like popcorn, cotton candy and other treats are packaged in 100% biodegradable packaging (even the labels are biodegradable!) and this is such a good thing for our planet. I love that when people come to watch sports (and concerts) in our city, they can see some innovative sustainability efforts too.
Are you a hockey fan or a fan of sustainability? And are you looking forward to the Kraken hockey season this year too?
PS. my family’s favorite food at Kraken hockey games is getting the vegetarian nachos from 1st Ave Nachos. My twin teenage boys often get the Big Chicken sandwiches at this arena as well. You can find out all about the food options at Climate Pledge Arena here.
