Did you love the Back to the Future movie in the 80’s as a kid? And then of course there was the Back to the Future sequel and maybe there were even more but I’m not too sure-everything in that era ended up with at least a Part 2. But we first saw signs for this musical in New York a few years ago and then we got tickets to it when we visited London for the Thanksgiving Holiday last year. Our family enjoyed it and our teenage boys loved it almost as much as Hamilton (their words not mine). I was really excited when I heard the Back to the Future Musical was coming to Seattle as part of the 2024/2025 season.

I get asked a lot about what I think of it and this musical isn’t like Wicked or Hamilton in the sense that you’ll be singing the songs when you get out of the theatre. I don’t really remember any of the songs except everything felt nuanced with the Back to the Future theme orchestral notes you will probably remember from the movie. (like Jaws, you’ll know them immediately if you hear them) But as a spectacle and a performance, the Back to the musical is very entertaining and enjoyable, and I’m not sure it would be necessary to know the plot to see it. The cast for the Seattle show is talented and energetic. And the set is one of the most high tech sets I think we’ve ever seen. (Theatre has come a long way from when we were all awe-struck by the giant chandelier falling in the Phantom of the Opera so many years ago)

I wouldn’t bring kids much younger than mine to this show-my teen boys were 15ish when they first saw it. They appreciated the very high tech set and the Delorean and they’ve watched the movie with us so they knew the plot. The movie also has a sensory guide so you know what to expect and I’m starting to appreciate these guides a lot lately too.

For tickets, according to the show’s website, you can purchase them with reduced fees at the box office Monday through Friday 10am-6pm. On the Paramount Theatre’s Facebook page there is mention that there may be Rush Tickets based on availability, first-come, first-serve at the Box Office: $30 tickets (limit of 2 tickets per ID) will be available 60 minutes prior to the performance. (cash or credit)

The Back to the Future Musical runs in Seattle through December 22nd at the Paramount Theatre downtown. For places to eat nearby we’ve tried Dough Zone next door but it can get really busy on theatre nights so it’s important to get there early if you expect to grab a bite. I always forget we have a Cheesecake Factory downtown-I haven’t been in years. There is a Sweetgreen about an 8 minute walk away and that’s my go-to fast food lately (the salmon protein bowl is so good)

(Also, for tickets, if a showtime says 7:30 it means that the show itself starts at 7:30-lately the first part of the shows we’ve been to often feel like a hockey game where people are shuffling in front of you to get to their seats while the show is going on. Doors open an hour before showtime so I think the ticket almost needs to say 6:30 for a 7:30 show.)
